Teenage Obesity Ever Growing Problem 06/01/2010
It is well known that teenage obesity is rapidly growing. The primary reason for this ever growing problem can easily be contributed to junk food. Sadly, junk food is a part of the general lifestyle of most teenagers. Eating junk foods instead of wholesome healthy meals seems to be the general trend for most teens, as well as families. When you combine this with an inactive lifestyle, then the stage is set for obesity. Most teens today seem to choose video games over some type of sporting activity. Not only does obesity impact one’s physical health, but it also affects mental health. With today’s teens, depression seems to have taken a strong hold and often this is due to the side effect of obesity. A low calorie diet of natural or organic foods instead of the high calorie sodas, sweets, pizza, burgers, etc. can make a huge impact in overcoming teenage obesity. Not only does obesity impact your teen’s self-esteem, but also it is linked to diseases such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar and heart attacks. Today both teens and young adults are becoming susceptible to heart attacks due to obesity. Heart attacks use to impact the middle age community but overweight teenagers are now experiencing heart attacks. Needles to say, reduction in food consumption is perhaps one of the best means to fight obesity. Adolescence in teens is the period of growth for their bodies. It is a time in their life that their bodies need a lot of nutrition. Instead of reduction in food intake, a teen should focus on making the right food choices and make physical activity a part of their lifestyle. Here are a couple of points for them to consider in helping them overcome or fight against teenage obesity: 1. Ditch the sedentary lifestyle. Get up, get moving and get going. Embrace outdoors sports, give dancing and swimming a try … basically engage in activities that will give you physical exercise. Put limits on TV viewing and videos games. When a teen has his or her focus on doing sedentary things, then the pursuit of healthier activities will be less likely. Instead of a new video game for a birthday gift, give your teen a diet exercise product, such as a set of weights or trampoline. 2. D. Calories basically fall into two types (simple and complex). You will find the complex calories in natural fruits such as apples and oranges. Junk foods and sugars are the simple calories foods. These are the ones that should be restricted and not eaten on a regular basis by your teen. Eating the right foods is very important in the fight against teenage obesity and is a diet that works. |
